We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr Sophie Dale-Black as our First Advisor!
Sophie is a scientifically trained and commercially driven consultant, advisor and non-executive director who is focused on the success of science and innovation-led businesses across the UK. As a member of the Forge Genetics advisory board, Sophie will play a pivotal role in the ongoing innovation of the company, shaping our long-term strategy, highlighting business opportunities and identifying key market trends.
Sophie brings with her a wealth of skills, and her scientific background solidifies her as a fantastic addition to the team. After completing a PhD in chemistry and X-ray crystallography at Loughborough University and a postdoctoral research position at Newcastle University, Sophie built a career in research and innovation management at Nottingham and Loughborough universities. Moving to Innovate UK further deepened her innovation experience, especially in the life sciences sector, and during her time there, she undertook a Chief of Staff style role, strategically supporting the Chief Executive, Governing Board and Chair.
Sophie’s non-executive experience includes serving as Vice Chair of the Governing Council at the University of Leicester. At the University, she is a member of the Nomination and Remuneration Committees and also a Trustee of its van Geest Foundation Cardiovascular Disease Research Fund. Additionally, Sophie has held advisory positions on UK Research and Innovation funded research programmes, and as a primary school governor.
Most recently, Sophie was employed as a Director at the British Business Bank, leading a team of senior managers across the Midlands and North of England. In this role, Sophie has worked alongside key partner organisations to help the Bank understand and overcome the challenges that small businesses face in their journey to secure finance.
On Sophie’s appointment, Craig Woods, CEO, comments, "Sophie has a strong track record of managing the research-to-innovation process, translating great ideas into real-world impacts. Her knowledge and experience of the UK innovation landscape will facilitate Forge Editing going from a lab-based gem to making gene therapies safer and more affordable.”
Sophie said, “I’m delighted to have this opportunity to support Forge Genetics on their exciting growth journey, where I can bring to the fore my interests in the life sciences sector, the commercialisation of academic research, and building business success for the Midlands region.”
Sophie is gradually transitioning away from her role at the British Business Bank to join us officially on June 12th 2024. Sophie’s arrival marks a significant milestone for Forge, and we look forward to seeing her contributions!
